Welcome back for another great season!
The AGM was held May 25, 2014 in Red Deer. Everyone who attended the meeting had their name put into a draw for a pair of bowling shoes sponsored by Sanders Pro. This year’s recipient was Jerry Budnyk of Edmonton. He was a very happy winner!!
National Success
The 2014 Nationals were held in Winnipeg with Alberta once again making a great showing!
The Alberta contingent won the Aggregate for the third year in a row. Congratulations to the entire contingent.
Our Tournament Division Ladies team finished in 2nd place bringing home a silver medal.
The Alberta Tournament Men brought home bronze medals.
The Teaching Ladies finished up in 4th place, while the Teaching men were 6th.
The Senior Division team finished in 5th place.
Following a 3 way tie for 3rd place, Monique Dunis won the Teaching Ladies Bronze medal!
Greg Gigliuk finished in 3rd place in the Senior Division Singles event winning a bronze medal as well. Greg was forced to play left handed this year following shoulder surgery last December. He encourages everyone to try it out!!
Jennifer Baker qualified second in the Tournament Ladies Singles Division and won her first match with games of 258 and 290. Jenn took the final match to 3 games but was defeated by only 13 pins in the final game. Congratulations to Jenn on her silver medal!!
Aaron Arndt was the defending Tournament Men’s Division Champion this year in Winnipeg, having won the singles title last year in Calgary. Aaron qualified 2nd in the match play leading up to the stepladder in Winnipeg. He won his first match in 3 games, which led him once again to the final. Aaron and his opponent split the first 2 games and then brought it all down to the 10th frame of the final game. It was a very exciting finish, with Aaron once again coming out victorious and winning the gold medal and his second singles title in a row. The final game was 333-320, in Aaron’s favor. Congratulations to Aaron! This is a feat that has never been accomplished before in the men’s division.
Alberta Masters Members Honored
We would like to congratulate Greg Gigliuk and Brian Rossetti. At the National Banquet, each of these gentlemen received the Master Bowlers’ Association of Canada “Award of Excellence” for Dedication and Performance.
Greg and Brian join Dianne Violini, Bruce Morter, Fran Clarke, Willy Moyes, and Lynn Howell in this elite group.
Greg has been a board member for 30 years and has provided valuable input to the success and growth of our organization. He has served as President, Past President, Tournament Director, Master/Youth and Master/YBC Director, and is currently our Treasurer.
On the performance side of the award, Greg has excelled thru coaching at the YBC level, the Open and the Master Bowlers’ Association.
On the lanes he has had success at both the Open and the Masters, as well as having appeared on CBC and TSN. Greg has bowled a perfect game and was selected as one of the top 100 bowlers of all time in Canada. Greg also competed on the 1st and only Canada Winter Games team in 1983 in Chicoutami, Quebec, where the Alberta team finished 4th.

As well, Brian has excelled on the lanes by representing Alberta as a bowler and a coach for many years. His success has led to a life membership in Alberta, induction into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame, and a ten year invitation to instruct at the Saskatchewan Summer Bowling School. In addition, Brian was selected to be the spokesperson for 5 pin bowling on CBC television on Sports Day in Canada.
Congratulations to Greg and Brian, both very deserving recipients of these awards!
